Lily of the Nile

Lily of the Nile 12x33 felted art Alexandra Keely MacLean

About the Artist

Alexandra Keely MacLean is a visual artist based in Fredericton, NB.  She holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and has recently completed her first semester in the Graduate Studies program at NBCCD.

Although Alexandra is constantly exploring new mediums, her passion and predominant means of expression lies within the Fiber Arts. Using an assortment of fibers and processes, which include dying, felting, weaving, spinning, and otherwise manipulating materials, she creates beautiful one-of-a-kind fashion apparel and art pieces.

About the Process

Felting, a process that is thousands of years old, is thought to be one of the earliest know textiles. Wool fibers, which consist of unidirectional scales, shrink when stimulated by friction, permanently binding together. Through the wet felting process where fibers are agitated by hand, with hot soapy water acting as a lubricant, Alexandra layers wool to achieve a painterly effect.
