On retiring from Health Care Administration in 2002, Mary Grant pursued her lifelong interest in artistic endeavours by taking oil painting classes from Danny Price. She continues with the classes to this day. Her other artistic pursuits are Traditional Rug Hooking, Quilting and Needlework.
Mary and her husband, Don are involved with the Fredericton Power and Sail Squadron. They love to take their cabin cruiser exploring the Saint John River and its lakes and rivers. They put together The Cruising Companion to the Saint John River (a reference for boaters which covers the river from Evandale to Woodstock).
Titled “Navigating the Way”, the painting is of the Sheffield church which was used in former times as a navigation aid for safely crossing the Saint John River. When coming upstream, if the boater could see only the front of the church, it was safe to cross; if he saw the side along with the front, he might run aground. The double meaning is the role of the church to people in the navigation of their lives which often seem to be going “upstream”.
