Artist Statement – Paul MacNeil
These creature doodles of mine go back a long way. When we were kids, some quirky drawings one of my sisters drew inspired me to do likewise. She chose other career paths, while I ended up mostly as a graphic artist, designer, or illustrator. These art auctions have certainly been a highlight for me.
As usual, for this auction I initially had a hard time deciding what to paint. So, when my wife Chrissie suggested some odd characters as a subject, I gladly went with the idea. I’ve generally tried to add whimsy to my paintings, and I think these guys fit the bill fairly well. For a backdrop I fell back on the night sky theme once again, and as an experiment I decided to use bands of solid color rather than a gradient to illustrate nightfall.
